Nosy Bé is quite a small place, and isn't exactly renowned for its shopping scene. That being said, there are a couple of interesting markets that are worth visiting, and there are some local items, such as the various different crafts, some local rum or even some exotic perfume that make nice souvenirs or gifts from the island.
Nosy Bé Shopping Guide
The markets, especially in Hell-Ville, are definitely worth visiting, especially if you plan on doing some shopping. There is an Artisan's market located on the outskirts of the town, which features a number of splendid local Malagasy handicrafts and works of art. They are often beautifully crafted, and, with a bit of bargaining, can be bought reasonably inexpensively. Crafts are a major and very important source of income for the local people.
The local rum is also worth sampling, and can make a great gift or souvenir of Nosy Bé. Due to its sub-tropical climate, sugarcane is prevalent throughout the island. The decision was taken in 1930 to import a complete rum distillery from Brazil. At the village of Djamandjary is the Sirama sugar refinery, which produces 1500-2000 tonnes of sugar per yer. Not surprisingly, this is also the locaiton of the local rum manufacturer. Take a tour around the factory, and sample some of their product.
A final, slightly more unusual, item you may wish to purchase is the local perfume. Made from the essence of the yellow Ylang Ylang flowers, this unique scent has led to Nosy Bé sometimes being referred to as the 'Pefume Island'. The trees can be found all over the island, and their branches bend down to the ground, giving the opportunity to smell their distinctive scent for yourself. If you'd like to see the production of the perfume, as well as have the opportunity to purchase some, you can visit one of the Ylang Ylang distilleries located on Nosy Bé.
